Mentally ill believers from every corner of the country came to Ronse on pilgrimage, hoping to be cured by St Hermes, throughout the Middle Ages. The condition for receiving a cure was some physical austerity in return. This is the origin of the Fiertel Procession, an annual 32.6 km walk. The reliquary of St Hermes is carried in a wide circle around the city on Trinity Sunday (the Sunday after Pentecost).
The Fiertel Procession was added to the list of immaterial cultural heritage of Flanders in 2009.
