The first carnival in the country
The Bommels Festival takes place during the first weekend after Epiphany (January 6).
'Bommel lopen' means walking around with a mask on. Because it takes place just after New Year, the Bommels Festival is one of the first carnival festivities in Belgium. Saturday evening is definitely the highlight of the festival. Giants, Theban trumpeters, carnival orchestras, various floats including the King's float, majorettes and hundreds of costumed partygoers march through the well-lit streets of the town centre. The parade ends on the Grote Markt with a huge musical firework display.
